• How to improve mold venting

Every mold maker knows that proper mold venting is crucial for manufacturing quality plastic injection molded parts. During the injection molding process, the air existing in the mold needs to be released, otherwise the melt will compress and trap that air in the cavity, causing burnings, short shots, bubbles, welding lines or cracks in the molded plastic part. How do you vent the mold? There are a few nonstandard venting solutions that can be added to cavity venting to improve mold performance as below: Open vent groove directly Usually the vent groove, or vent channel are machined on the flat surface in either peripheral or direct way. There are primary and secondary venting channels.          Use clearance of ejector pins and ejector sleeve.       There is clearance of around 0.01-0.02mm between ejector pins & ejector sleeves and core/cavity. This could be used…

  • What is Mould Shrinkage?

Shrinkage is a characteristic of resin which occurs during plastic injection molding process. Different resins have different mold shrinkages. Crystalline and semi-crystalline materials exhibit higher shrinkage than amorphous materials. Unreinforced plastics have higher shrinkage than reinforced grades. It is important that the grade of material be selected before the injection mold tooling is constructed and that the proper mold shrinkage be specified.   Mold shrinkage rate can vary with part and tool design: thick walls will have higher shrinkage rates than thin, variation in section thickness can cause differential shrinkage and warpage;flow direction will effect shrinkage, particularly with glass fiber-reinforced grades       Shrinkage in mould is also influenced by process conditions. As cavity pressure increases, shrinkage typically will decrease. The plastic injection mold and melt temperature will also influence shrinkage. Cooler molds will reduce shrinkage while hotter melt temperatures will increase shrinkage especially with semi-crystalline materials.   Contact HS Mold Company for shrinkage recommendations on any of plastic injection molded products. We…

  • High Performance of Molded Fiberglass Products

Glass fiber reinforced plastic are composite materials made of polyester, usually thermoset resin, glass fiber and filler in custom fiberglass molding  process. Generally speaking, most of the glass fiber reinforced materials can be used to create large, complex structures in any number of geometric shapes, including contoured and rounded FRP Molded Products.  Thermoset polymers used as resins in the manufacture of reinforced plastic includes PP, ABS, PA66, PA6, PC, POM, PPO, PET, PBT, PPS, etc.. Fiber reinforced plastics are overall a highly advantageous material providing a number of benefits in a wide variety of areas from physical properties to resistances to aesthetics.   Advantage of glass fiber reinforced plastic 1.Glass fiber reinforced plastic is a high-temperature resistant material, therefore, the heat-resistant temperature of reinforced plastics is much higher than that non-reinforced polymers, especially nylon plastics.  FRP is a durable material which can last years in extreme hot weathers and temperatures with minimal wear. With theaddition of glass fiber, the reinforced plastic restricts the plastic movement between the…

  • Why we need Prototype?

Prototyping is an important step in the process of New Product Development. Prototypes can be inexpensively prepared by CNC machining stock shapes, by thermo-forming them from sheet stock, or simple injection molding tools can be made from soft steel or aluminum. In addition to providing a three dimensional presentation of the design, a prototype allows: Subjecting the part to the chemical and mechanical environment it will endure in real life Accelerated testing for part life Checking compatibility with anticipated secondary assembly operations How to protoype? Prototype molds may be simple or complex, steel or aluminum. Injection molded prototypes from molds that have cooling channels can supply cycle time estimates and guidelines for commercial tooling. Determination of shrinkage factors, optimum gate sizes, vent locations and effect of mold temperature should also be established. Molded prototypes are preferred because flow orientation may influence performance. The latter is particularly important in glass-filled compositions.HS Mold excels in…

  • Stack Mold Technology & Application

Stack Mold Technology & Application This article mainly decribes about Stack Mold Technology & Application in plastic injection molding. What is Stack mold? Stack mold can be described as a mold assembly consisting of a series of single-face molds of the same size, mounted back-to-back or “stacked” next to the other. Without increasing the plastic injection molding machine platen size or tonnage, stack molds double (or more for increased stack mold levels) the output of standard plastic injection molds, increasing molding efficiency and reducing the overall part cost. Stack molds can also produce multi-component assemblies or a family of parts in one shot on one plastic injection molding machine. Most stack molds have an equal number of the same cavities in each side of the mold, or parting surface, but they can also have different cavities in each mold parting surface to produce a family of parts per shot, with each part being a different…

  • How to define number of cavities in a plastic injection mold?

When it comes to cavity number for a plastic injection mold, there is a lot to be considered by injection molder though usually the number of cavities is decided by the customer.  Please note the following:   The most important thing to consider is the size of the part and how complext. Does the part have a lot of slides, lifters, core pulls etc. Size of press that the mold is going to run in, how many tons in the press rated for, what’s the platen size, and what’s the shot size. What is total quantity of the part? all you must consider delivery time on the parts. If you have a tight just in time delivery schedule that will also determine the amount of cavities needed to support the timing. What is the target cycle time? How is the resin going to be distributed within the mold? surface runner, insulated…
